Music requests

Introduction

I always try to help people looking for a particular piece of music, so don't hesitate to
email me with any requests you may have. But please read this page first.

Time

I might be able to get you the music for you concert next Thursday, but don't count on it! Sometimes I can send it to you within five minutes, sometimes it takes a month or more.
It all depends on whether I have the music readily available myself, how big a work you're looking for, and how much time I happen to have.

And, of course, sometimes I'm not able to help you at all. I do not have access to all the music ever written, remember.

Copyrights

Musica Viva only deals with music that is in the public domain according to Norwegian copyright laws. That is, either the composer has to be unknown or he or she has to have been dead for 70 years or more.

Why Norwegian copyright laws? Well, Musica Viva i hosted in Norway, and run by a Norwegian citizen living in Norway. Anyway, the copyright laws are much the same in most every civilized country in the world. (But don't ask me about Russia or USA - their laws are really weird.)

Pop, rock etc.

This is really the same as the copyrights paragraph above, but I think I have to emphasize it:

Music that has been written the last few years is copyright protected and can not be legally distributed through internet.
If I started posting that kind of stuff on Internet, I'd probably have to pay a really stiff fee sooner or later. I might even get arrested for it. And the police would certainly come and close Musica Viva down. I value both my freedom, the little money I have and this site far too much to risk something like that, so just forget it!

It's not just about law. There is a moral aspect to this too.
Yes, sheet music is far too expensive these days, and yes, most of the money you pay goes right into the fat pockets of the big guys rather than the people who wrote the music in the first place.
But still, if you want sheet music for the latest hits, please go buy it so that the composer will get at least some money for his/her work.

This has nothing to do with what kind of music I personally like, btw. I think building fences between different music styles is just silly. Louis Armstrong once said that there are just two types of music, good music and bad music. I agree, but if you honestly love what you're playing, you won't make much of the bad kind.

There's no need asking me to mail you some copyright protected music either, by the way. Even if I happen to have it in my own collection (usually I don't), I won't mail it to you!
