The history of Webring

The webring concept was a brilliant idea some people at Geocities came up with: Find a way to interlink web sites with similar content. For the webmasters this meant a lot of really interested visitors, for the surfers it meant a much easier way to navigate the web.

Webring was originally run as a "semi-official" subsidiary to Geocities. When Yahoo bought up Geocities, they also took over Webring.
Yahoo had some serious plans for the webring concept, but unfortuantely they didn't handle it very well, moving too fast, alienating many ring- and webmasters and failing to plan properly.
In the ned Yahoo gave up the whole concept. They saw the potential of the idea, and how well it could fit in with their directory and the Yahoo groups, but they never managed to figure out exactly how to incorporate it into the Yahoo system, nor did they find a way to actually make any money from the idea. In the ned they decided to just give up.

Fortunately, some enthusiastic Yahoo employees liked Webring so much, they decided to take over and run it on a voluntary basis, and although Webring still hasn't recovered completely from the Yahoo-experience, it's back on its original tracks now and getting better every day.
