The banjo accompaniment is more or less standard "basic strumming" the way Pete Seeger describes it. Some may call it clawhammer style or frailing. The only modification I've done to the basic figure is to move some of the fifth string notes to the fourth string, partly to make it possibel to play in standard g tuning, but mostly to avoid the high drone tone that I didn't think was appropriate in this case.
Some may say this American style isn't really suitable for Irish/Celtic style banjo. Although they do have a point, Tommy Makem played pure Seeger style, so it isn't completely unknown to the genre. More important, it's a simple and very effective way to accompany a tune like this.
