German composer. Johann (or Johannes) Jeep studied in Italy. He worked as a Kapellmeister to the Hohenlohe court at Weikersheirn (near Würzburg) from 1614 to 1635. In 1637 he took a post as Kapellmeister and cathedral organist in Frankfurt and in 1642 he moved to Hanau and worked as Kpellmeister there. Johann Jeep published a number of psalms and sacred songs, but his most important works is "Studentgärtlein," two volumes (published 1605 and 1613) of songs that initiated a tradition of simple strophic secular songs for students.
