Hyvän illan sanon sulle kultani armas
kun tulen taas sua tervehtimään.
Sinisiä silmiä kasvoita kauniita
mun teki mieleni katselemaan.
Sinisiä silmiä kasvoita kauniita
mun teki mieleni katselemaan.

Vaikka minä vaeltasin ympäri maata
asusin jo jäämeren takana.
Kuvasi on kätketty sytämeni alle
toivoni ei pitä lakata.
Kuvasi on kätketty sytämeni alle
toivoni ei pitä lakata.

This beautiful song is from Erkheikki in northern Sweden. Thanks to Terje Aronsen who taught me the tune.

I do from time to time get emails from people asking whether Hyvän Illan is Swedish, Finnish or Norwegian. It's not easy to give a definite answer to it. The song almost certainly originated in Erkheikki, northern Sweden, but it's in Kvenish, a Finnish dialect, and known all over the Kvenish region. The Kvens came from Finland and settled in unpopulated areas in the northernmost part of Scandifirmly defined that far north. Even today they maintain strong cultural bonds across the borders.
The song is actually best known in Norway because it was used as the theme song for the Norwegian TV series "Nattseilerne" ("The Night Sailors") a while ago.
