About the ratings

The Musica Viva Instrument Gallery is an open gallery and no musical instrument is denied a place here because it isn't "worthy" enough.

However, to paraphrase Orwell, all instruments are equal but some are more equal than others.

So I decided to rate the items based on historical importance, level of coolness and unusualness (the predecessor to the gallery was called "Cool and Unusual Instruments" and that's still an important point here), image quality (this ia gallery after all) and that ever elusive x-factor.

Please note that this rating is my personal opinion and also that it's bound to chance all the time. I do not take votes from visitors here but if you strongly feel that an instrument is rated too high or too low, please don't hesitate to send me an email (remember to tell me exactly which instrument you have in mind. You might manage to change my mind. ;-)

The ratings are (bottom to top):

  1. Entires without pictures. These are rated 1 regardless of any other factor
  2. I guess you could call them "supplementary entires." Most instruments from old trade catalogs are rated 2 and there might be quite a few duplicates since the same instrument may be listed in several catalogs.
  3. The rank and file. Also entries I haven't gotten around to look at properly yet.
  4. A bit over the average.
  5. Definitely above average.
  6. The créme de la créme
