Windows only - so farAt the moment spyware seems to be a problem for Windows users only. If you use a Macintosh or a Linux/Unix computer you can relax for now. But don't let you guard down completely. You never know when the crooks decide to target your platform too.The problemSpyware - or "sleazeware" as it is more appropriately called - is one of the most recent fads in internet marketing. A small application is installed on your computer (often without your knowledge and consent) monitoring your internet activities and serving you unwanted advertisements. The most common spyware application right now, is an application called Gator. It's not nearly as bad as a virus, but it does slow down your computer and those ads can be a real nuisance. Perhaps most important: Do you really want to let some company with questionable ethics monitor your web surfing? They say they only do it to serve you the most relevant ads, but can you trust them? Of course you can't. You better get rid of them. The solutionSince spyware is supposedly "legal" software, it ought to be easy to just deinstall it. Not so! Obviously the soyware manufacturers don't want you to deinstall, so most of them have made it as difficult as possible to do. Besides, how can you deinstall something you don't know you have?Virus protection software won't help you here either. They don't recognize spyware as a threat to your computer. What you need is Spybot Search & Destroy. It does the trick - and it's even free! (Well, the originator has set up a voluntary donation system, and of course you should send him some money if you can afford it and the program helped you, but it's all up to you.)
